Editor-In-Chief Of Republic Arnab Goswami Held In 2018 Suicide Abetment Case

Arnab Goswami and two Others Sent to 14 Day Judicial Custody

The editor – in – Chief of Republic TV, Arnab Goswami has been sent to 14 days judicial custody for abetment of suicide by Alibaug District Magistrate Court along with Feroz Sheikh of icastX/Skimedia and Nitesh Sarda of Smartworks.  Arnab Goswami was arrested by the Raigad police from his house this morning. Goswami alleged that the police assaulted him physically and beat his son up although the police denied any such allegations.

On May 5th, 2018, interior designer Anvay Naik died by suicide in his farmhouse at Kavir Village, Alibaug. In his suicide note, Naik named Goswami, Sarda and Sheikh as the cause of his suicide as they did not pay his dues amounting to Rs. 5.40 crores for his interior designing work, due to which his firm  Concorde Designs Private Limited reported losses. According to the suicide note, Goswami owed Naik, Rs. 83 lakh for designing his Bombay Dyeing Studio, Sheikh had to pay Rs. 4 crores, for his project in Andheri and Sarda owed Rs. 55 lakh for the Magarpatta and Baner projects. Naik’s mother had also been strangulated and murdered in the farmhouse. The case was closed but reopened when Naik’s daughter approached the DIG about it.

While the BJP –  including many senior leaders like Amit Shah –  have condemned the arrest saying it was reminiscent of the times of the emergency where the freedom of the press was curtailed, the Shiv Sena counter questioned the BJP as to their intentions behind defending Goswami.

Congress congratulated the Shiv Sena for taking action against Goswami and said that Naik’s family would get justice soon.

People have taken to Twitter, Instagram and other social media platforms to both criticize and support the Raigad polices move. Some people criticized the way Arnab was handled by the Raigad police. The family members of Anvay Naik have welcomed the arrest and said that they have waited for long and hope they will get justice.
