On 10th November, Shabana Saeed, producer Firoz Nadiadwala’s wife was granted bail by a city court. She had been arrested, on Sunday, for allegedly possessing drugs by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).
Ganja or marijuana was found at her Juju residence during a search conducted by the Bureau. This led to her arrest on Sunday. On Monday, a court sent her to 14-day judicial custody. According to the decision of the additional chief judicial magistrate, A H Kashiskar, the accused was released on bail and a Rs 15,000 personal bond. The counsel for the accused, Advocate Ayaz Khan, requested for release on bail since the arrest involved the seizure of a minor amount of drugs.
The accused, Shabana, was a consumer but not a peddler or promoter of drugs. Therefore the counsel for the accused argued that the maximum conviction imprisonment for the crime could be one year. He submitted before the court that she is a single mother, separated from her spouse and needs to provide for her children.The accused had been charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. On Sunday, an official from the apex drug law enforcement agency had stated that 10 grams of the contraband drug had been found and seized during the search.
The NCB had claimed that the marijuana had been prima facie obtained from a Wahid Abdul Kadir Sheikh alias Sultan. He has been arrested earlier.The statement of Firoz Nadiadwala regarding the same was recorded by the NCB.
So far, 5 persons including the above mentioned accused have been arrested by the NCB, in this latest crackdown on contraband distributors and their buyers. So far, a cash amount of 3,58,610 rupees and 727.1 grams of marijuana, 95.1 gram MD and 74.1 gram charas were seized. This probe into the rampant druguse in the Bollywood industry began after the death of Hindi film actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June which led to the discovery of WhatsApp conversations that involved drugs.
The late actor’s girlfriend, actress Rhea Chakraborty, Showik her brother and certain other of his employees had been arrested and charged under numerous sections of the NDPS Act. Some of the accused, such as Rhea Chakraborty have recently been released on bail.
