A statement was released by Sahba Hussain who is a journalist and activist Gautam Navlakha’s partner who was one of the accused in Bhima Koregaon case. Her statement explained how his spectacles were stolen in the Taloja jail and how they refused to accept the new pair sent by his family even though he is nearly blind with them, she alleged. The authorities would not allow him to speak his family for 3 days after that. The statement that was released also stated that the jail authorities were well informed about his vision impairment and that the parcel sent containing the specs was accepted and not returned. Despite this effort the parcel was not accepted by the authorities. It was also explained that presently Navlakha was unable to see things. The statement also went ahead to comment on the tall claims made by the Indian authorities on the jail conditions but does not recall the situations in which 80 year old Stan Swamy was driven desperate for a sipper and straw, Varavara Rao turned critically ill in jail, amidst lamentable conditions in jail and quarantine centres. The spectacles were sent by a courier service which delivered it on 5th December and the package was returned the very next day. Due to the Parkinson’s disease, Father Stan Swamy could not hold a glass while drinking water and hence he had filed an application for a sipper and straw, it was stated that they did not find these items on him during the arrest and hence they could not provide him with the same. Due to this multiple straws and sippers were sent to the Taloja jail. At last, it was informed to the Special NIA Court by his lawyer that he was provided with the items along with the winter clothes.
