In the matter of the next Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh the Central government has cleared the appointment of Justice Pankaj Mithal. The current Chief Justice Gita Mittal retired in December and hence Justice Pankaj Mithal has been appointed to helm the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. Justice Rajesh Bindal was acting Chief Justice in the light of the retirement of Justice Gita Mittal. It was notified on 31st December 2020 that Justice Rajesh Bindal is transferred to the Calcutta High Court. Being enrolled in the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh as an advocate in 1985, Justice Pankaj Mithal practiced before the Allahabad High Court until 2006 when he was elevated as an additional in the High Court and in 2008 he became a permanent judge. On December 14 the Supreme Court of India send in a recommendation of Justice Pankaj Mithal as the next Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
