A history teacher in Paris, Samuel Paty was beheaded for showing photos of the Prophet Mohammad in class. The killer, Abdoulakh A was shot dead by the police. The assailant was said to be in touch with a parent who led protests against the teacher for showing the photos. According to some students, the Muslim students in the class were asked to leave, if they felt offended before Samuel showed the photos as he said he didn’t want to hurt their feelings.
15 people have been detained in the case which includes four students and the family of the killer. Rallies are underway in France, defending Samuel and the freedom of speech. This killing has shocked France. The police have carried out around 40 raids in the houses of Islamist radicals.
President Emmanuel Macron has promised clampdown of Islamist extremism that has been growing in France. The Interior Minister, Gerald Darmanin ordered for a mosque to be closed down as part of a clampdown on Islamist extremism. The Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer said that for his sacrifice Samuel will be awarded the highest order of merit, the Legion of Honor. The French President will attend a memorial service at Paris’ La Sorbonne University on 21st October 2020 in his honour.
