EWS quota of 10% reservation in government jobs put forward by Kerala state government has been accepted by Public Service Commission in Kerala on 2nd November 2020.
EWS (Economically Weaker Section) is an economically backward section of our society who were previously not eligible for caste or community-based reservation for government jobs or admissions to higher education in colleges and universities of India. Applicants, whose family income is less than 4 lakhs are eligible for this reservation. But if their family possess more than 2 acres of land, then it makes them ineligible for EWS category.
Earlier, the central government has decided to give 10% reservation to EWS category based on 103rd amendment to the constitution. Now the state governments are slowly implementing the decision in the state cabinet.
The Kerala government has approved the EWS quota in government jobs from 20th October 2020 onwards. PSC has adopted it 2 weeks later.
Many political parties have criticized this move based on its implementation. Furthermore, caste-based politicians and activists backlashed against the government’s decision since, according to them, the EWS reservation will make the caste-based reservation ineffective.
