NASA makes a ground breaking discovery!

On 26 October, 2020 Nasa made an official announcement stating it has found the presence of water on the sunlit side of the moon. One of the most awaited discoveries has been finally been found. NASA’s SOFIA telescope(research aircraft) was the one behind this marvelous discovery. Paul Hertz, director of the Astrophysics Division in the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington stated ‘We had indications that H2O – the familiar water we know – might be present on the other side of the moon. ‘

One of the main objectives for the Artemis Key exploration plans was to learn about the presence of water on moon’s surface and also about the existence of micro life forms. The water molecules were discovered inside Clavius Crater which is visible from the Earth. Also, last year concentrated hydrogen was also found. But scientists are still unsure if it will remain for long on the surface as the moon has a very thin atmosphere and water is generally stored in ice caps or in the deepest craters. Also, NASA stated that tiny cold traps might be housing water ice. This discovery is definitely an ice breaker as it is a mind blowing discovery for researchers and space scientists, they also look forward to see if the water on the lunar surface is usable or not.

This discovery would pave way for further research and can also turn the tables as it question some of the past theories which have been associated with our natural satellite’s rocky surface. Understanding the hydrological dynamics will give a boost to human missions. This also gives hope as finding the presence of water on other celestial bodies in our solar system can a source of research and  deep space exploration.

NASA, to grant $14.1 million to NOKIA for setting up 4g network on the moon

NASA is set to colonise the moon. The organisation has set aside an amount of $370 million in a deal with 14 companies, which will provide ‘Tipping Point’ technologies for Artemis Mission. These technologies will provide methods of generating resources for human sustenance on the moon i.e.-oxygen and energy resources. The technology will also provide robotics in order to facilitate it.

Under this deal, NASA has given NOKIA a grant of $14.1 million for building a 4g network on the moon by 2022 which will eventually evolve into 5g network in the future. This technology will help in the control of lunar rovers, real-time navigation of moon’s surface, streaming of HD videos etc.

It has been recently claimed by NOKIA Bell Labs, a research and scientific unit of NOKIA, that ‘LTE network can withstand extreme temperature, radiation, vacuum in space and vibrational impact during the launch and landing on the lunar surface’.

Space habitation seems more like a reality than ever with evolving technology and greater interest in space exploration.
